Itineraries & Tour Guides

Adventuring off the beaten track!

Northern Malawi offers a rich variety of travel experiences, whether you’re backpacking on a budget, hiking from village to village, exploring by local boat, or enjoying the comfort of a guided 4×4 tour. This diverse and off-the-beaten-track region is full of surprises, which is exactly why we love it. For a peaceful start to your journey, stop at Ntchisi Forest on your way from Lilongwe, where you’ll find tranquil hikes, beautiful sunsets, coffee tours, and some of Malawi’s last remaining indigenous rainforest.
As you pass through Mzuzu, visit Macondo’s community shop and enjoy a delicious chocolate tasting with Kwanza Chocolate. Further north, explore Livingstonia’s dramatic cliffs and waterfalls, or take a guided hike to Nyika Plateau or down to the lake for panoramic views and a glimpse into local history. Discover the hidden beauty of lakeside villages like Chitende, Ruarwe, and Usisya- boat hopping or embarking on multiday hikes.
In Nkhata Bay, dive into adventure with cultural tours, boat trips, and scuba diving. Then unwind in Luwawa Forest with forest trails, an activity centre, or even a horseback ride with Viphya Plateau Stables. Visit Nkhotakota National Park to see a vast, untouched wilderness for walking safaris and spotting elephants in their natural habitat.
Theres plenty to do. See below for more ideas, and how to plan your own trip!

Volunteering

There are many grassroots, low-cost, and genuinely impactful volunteering opportunities in Northern Malawi. As voluntourism becomes a more popular way to travel with purpose, we encourage an ethical approach that supports and empowers communities, rather than replacing local efforts. Butterfly Space is a vibrant hub for diverse community development and education projects, offering plenty of ways to get involved. Volunteers can support English practice in their schools and nurseries, introduce new games and learning activities, run media or IT workshops, share vocational skills, or lend a hand with agroecology workshops in communities. The Mushroom Farm welcomes those with an interest in permaculture, while The Cove invites volunteers passionate about natural building and community-based projects. Some eco-lodges also host volunteers to run events and promote activities too. It’s a chance to take part in meaningful exchange, support sustainable initiatives, and become part of the local community.
